When it Rains, It Pours

I am experienced a downpour last week. No, it is not because of the Typhoon Mina that ruined my long weekend. What I am talking about is the downpour of recognition that I am receiving from my fellow bloggers.

Last time, I received the Commendable Comments Award from Steve. Now, another blogger friend cared to give me another another award. That blogger is Anney of the blog, Blog ni Ako. Anney gave me the:

I am glad that Anney gave me this recognition. Thank you very much for this Anney. This is the second time I received the Versatile Award. Foong gave me this award last year.

This award is not a simple award but the requires the receiver to say seven random things about himself. I already gave seven random things about me on the Versatile Award post that I received from Foong. However, to keep the ball rolling, I will give seven new random thing about me, and here they are:

1. I am a Pokemon addict and I became hooked with Pokemon the first time I saw it on TV when I am still a high school student. I am still playing Pokemon up until now even if I am already beyond my teenage years.

2. People who I met online think that I am an outspoken person because of my active stance on various issues like the RH Bill. The truth is I am a silent person in real life and some of my acquaintances consider me as a boring person.

3. I travel mostly south of Metro Manila and you can see the proof on the Lakbayan Map posted on the bottom left of my blog. My plan is to travel north of Metro Manila in my future travels.

4. I don't own a cat and I don't plan owning a cat as a pet although one of my dream pet is a tiger.

5. I love eating sweets, especially chocolates. I can gobble five Hershey bars plus some Toblerones on one sitting.

6. I don't cook, I just eat. However, I might learn to cook in the future because my beloved is asking me to cook special dishes for her ^_^.

7. I am not fond of giving presents because I have that this fear that people will not like my presents for them. That is why I tell my friends not to expect gifts from me.

An Award for a Simple Comment

I never expected that a simple comment of mine will have a positive impact to anyone, especially on my blogger-friends. However, a pleasant surprise showed that at least one of my comments affected another person positively.

I was glad to discover, one day while I was browsing through my Facebook account, that a blogger-friend of mine left a message and a badge showing his appreciation of sincerity on the comments that I left on his blog. That friend is Steve, who is the owner of the blog Artistic World.

Steve created a post about the RH Bill, which is the most controversial issue in the Philippines these days. I was glad to discover that we are on the same side and as a token of gratitude, I left a comment to bolster his position against the RH Bill.

I never knew that Steve will appreciate that comment to the point that he will give me this:

Steve said that he is sorry that he can't give me any cash price for the award. Well, the heck with cash prizes. The fact that I am appreciated by a fellow blogger is more valuable than cash prizes. Positive reaction to my comments, especially my comments on my Pro-life and anti-RH Bill, is enough prize for me.

Finally! A Domain Name

After long weeks of waiting, I finally set-up the new domain name of my reviews and tips blog. From the free domain name provided by Blogger (which is blogspot.com), my Ahab Reviews and Tips blog now has a .com for its address.

Circumstances are working against me as I set Ahab Reviews and Tips to custom domain. There is an instance when I can’t register the custom domain in GoDaddy because the browser in my laptop is not working well. There is an instance when I got stump because I can’t use my PayPal account to buy the custom domain because it requires me to verify my account by using a credit card or debit card. Because of this, I was forced to apply for a Unionbank EON Card just to verify my Paypal Account.

After all the hassles, I finally bought and set-up my new custom domain. Now it is time for me to get serious in this blogging business and earn as much money as my idol Bluedreamer.

Search engines are essential parts of our blogs because they serve as the source of the visitors and readers of our blogs. Yahoo, MSN, Bing and Google are just few of the search engines out there. Of the available search engines, it is Google that leads the rest. I had said it because majority of the visitors of my blogs were referred by the Google search engine. Because of this, I try to find ways to tame befriend and use Google to my advantage. I target keywords that are related to my blog posts so that it will be on an advantageous position when people search on Google. It requires hard work to look for applicable key words for my blog posts but I believe that I am doing a good job.

Because of the many visitors that Google brings, many websites are finding ways to take advantage of it and one of those ways is to hire agencies that help you target specific keywords that you want for your websites. There are also other schemes available and I guess a simple search in Google will reveal those things.

Blogging is a serious business, especially if your aim is to get money out of it. Thus, if you are into moneymaking through blogging, then I am sure that you are also serious in marketing. I also market my blogs by posting comments on other blogs. One thing that I haven’t tries is to use email marketing to market my blogs.

I know email marketing since the time I opened my first e-mail account in Yahoo. I have been receiving spam messages from time to time, which I know is a furious attempt by some companies to market their products and services. As of now, I still receive promotional emails but many of them go to my Spam Inbox.

Many professional blogger profess to the usefulness of email marketing. Famous blogger, Problogger says that email marketing is an effective tool if it was used right. So with the benefits of email marketing, I think it is time for me to learn more about it so that I could use it for my blogs.

Last week, my friend in Facebook sent me a private message asking me about how to start a website. My friend is quite clueless in starting a website or starting a blog. She said that it she is not the one who is planning to start a website. Her friend wants to start a website or blog for their Facebook group.

So how could you start a website, or a blog? There are many ways that you could do it. But first, you must consider the things that you want to see on your planned website. For my friend’s website, since it was a site for their Facebook group, then she must consider a website that fosters interactivity among the member of the group. Chatbox, chatroom, and other widgets that promote real-time interactivity are needed.

Also, you must consider the webhosting of the site. You could opt for a free webhosting from Blogger or Wordpress or get a paid webhosting so that you could get a .com domain for your planned site. You could also consider email hosting, which are available to some hosting providers in the Internet.

Like what I said to my friend, if you are starting a website, you must plan very well so as not to waste you money, effort, and time.

Suitapui – I make sure to drop by his blog regularly and drop some comments. I like to read the delectable foods that he posts. It is a kind of a cultural exposure for me. Also, he is one of the nicest fellow I met in the blogging world.

Tine – she is the most “makulit” friend that I have on Twitter. She is one busy student and only updates her blog when her free time permits. But still, I like to read her “makulit” posts.

Reminiscing with #SentiSabado

Last Saturday, I got caught in a game played by Filipino netizens in Twitter. This game used the hashtag #sentisabado and participants should tweet anything that happened or could be found during their high school or their grade school days.

Sentisabado stands for “sentimental sabado.” Sabado is Saturday in English. I first noticed #sentisabado in the tweet of @trish_roque. After that, I noticed more and more of my Twitter contacts are tweeting #sentisabado.

The game sounds fun so I joined in. Some of tweets reminiscing my school days include:

1. “Waking every Saturday morning to watch Disney cartoons.” – Well I like those times when I only turn on the TV during Saturday morning and watch old Mickey Mouse cartoons, Silly Symphony, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Timon and Pumba, and many more. Maybe it is good to be young again.

2. “Watching informative shows like 5 and UP. Atom Araullo and Chyna Hortaleza are youngsters back then.” – I grew up watching such informative shows. Other shows are Batibot, Sineskwela, Mathinik, and Hiraya Manawari. It seems that local TV nowadays abandoned its responsibility to educate the youth.

3. “Hearing my classmates debate on what is the best boy band: A1, Westlife or Backstreet Boys.” – My girl high school classmates went gaga over these boy bands while my male classmates are talking about Linkin’ Park, Limpbizkit, and Eminem. That’s our music back then. No Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber yet.

4. “Piko, patintero, agawan base, block one two three.” – The time when computer games are never heard of yet. We always go out of the house to play with our neighbors these street games. We are all sweaty, exhausted, and sometimes bruised after every game but we really have much fun.

Well, these are some of my reminiscing and it kinda made memories of childhood flash back in my mind. I miss a lot of things in my childhood days. These reminiscing made me enjoyed #sentisabado but what is more enjoyable is the fact that you see hundreds of Filipinos sharing their memories of their childhood. It is great to see hundreds of tweets wherein you could say that, yeah! That same thing happened to me too. And that is delightful.

Time to Get Serious in Blogging

Maybe some of you had noticed that I had new blog post nearly every single day. Well, the reason is that I did not suddenly become an addict blogger. The truth is that I have been addicted to blogging since three years ago and nothing has changed since then. I think, now is the time for me to step up my blogging career and be a more serious blogger.

For the past months, I have been studying the intricacies of blogging. I have read tips from professional bloggers like Darren Rowse. I have applied many of their tips here on my blog, especially on marketing my site and raising its pagerank. I implemented some of the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques that I collected from the World Wide Web. I have also absorbed the mantra of Social Media Optimization (SMO), that's why I joined the social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

I also came out of my shell and I imbibed in the belief that I am a part of a community. This is the reason why I am eager to attend any blogging seminar and conferences that I discover. That is also the reason why I began connecting with my fellow Filipino bloggers, so that I could be a part of the Filipino blogging community. Aside from my Filipino blogging friends, I also got connection from my non-Filipino blogger friends who gave this blog better perspectives.

So far so good. The tips and techniques that I got from the blogging gurus are giving this blog some positive results. Now is the time for me to rise up. I believe that I should continue absorbing tips from the blogging gurus; study the potential of web hosting, like vps web hosting; and continue my foray in the social media.

Honoring the Overseas Filipino Bloggers

We, Filipinos, are known for our love of our family. This love pushed many of our kababayans (fellowmen) to become Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). Our kababayans chose to work abroad to give their families a brighter future. Currently, many of our kababayans are also thinking of leaving the country because of the grim economic situation of the Philippines.


As of the moment, thousands of our kababayans are scattered around the world. The remittance that our country receives from them is so great that the government hailed the Overseas Filipinos as the bagong bayani (new heroes) of the country. The sad thing is that the “bagong bayani” tag is just an empty title and the authorities are doing nothing to truly honor or even protect the Overseas Filipino.


Aside from the success stories of working abroad, news from abroad shows the grim situations of many Overseas Filipinos. Many of the Overseas Filipinos were abused by their employers, others were tricked by their employment agencies, and the worst is that our embassies are useless in helping them.

Stories like these and more are the ones that the Pinoy Expat/OFW Blog Awards (PEBA) wants to show to the world, especially to all Filipinos and the Philippine Government. PEBA aims to honor the Overseas Filipinos who chose blogging as their outlet to share their experiences while working abroad. PEBA wants the whole Philippines to be acquainted with the sorrows, joys, anger, and perceptions of our kababayans abroad.

In the end, PEBA aims to strengthen the connection between the Overseas Filipinos around the world and the Filipinos here in the Philippines.

I have already read the stories posted by Kiko, BatangGala, Kayni, and Bhing who are all nominees of PEBA.

First Needles from the Haystack

Three is this day's lucky number. Today is the third year anniversary of my blog, Before the Eastern Sunset. It is three years ago since I first posted my very first blog post in this blog. I remember during those days that I wrote nothing other than things the rumblings of my hopeless romantic heart. Thankfully, I overgrew those things and I wrote on things that interests me and. This blog had been my online companion for these past three years and it still help me in giving me a diversion from the stressful activities of my daily life.

Ah Mothers!

What will happen to all of us if they do not exist? Obviously, we will also not exist.

Our mothers are the ones who gave us our lives. They are the ones who endured the sleepless nights, when we are just little babies, so as to keep us safe and comfortable. They are the ones who cry first on all of our failure and they are the first ones who are delighted to our all of our success. They are their prop us up when we fell.

My friend just sent me an SMS message that goes like this:

"I believe in love at first sight. Since the very first day that my eyes opened, she is the one I first saw and the very first person that I loved. I love you mom."

How true! We learned to love because we are loved by our mothers.

Learning Things and Meeting Peeps at iBlog6

I finally got the chance to meet many bloggers in person yesterday when I attended the second day of the 6th Philippine Blogging Summit or iBlog6. I did not just had the chance to meet bloggers but I also got the chance to forge friendship with them and exchanged important information that will be helpful in my blogging career.

Kudos to the organizers of iBlog6 and their sponsors who made the event possible. They have a good roster of speakers that gave presentations that are informative and will be helpful to all bloggers, newbie or professional blogger alike.

Vince Golangco's presentation on video blogging opened up some ideas in my mind. If I will pursue video blogging in the future, his tips and tricks will be definitely useful.

Juned Sonido talked about Photo Blogging and displayed his arsenal of cameras on stage. His tips on street photography and candid shots is useful since I mostly use these styles on this blog. His most memorable tips for photoblogging is that the photographer is more important than the camera.  I also learned about him the importance of “Decisive Moments” in getting a remarkable picture.

The talk on blogging on mobile platforms and running contests on blogs are also informative. Jinoe Gavan's talk on running contests on blogs gave me an idea to run a certain contest for my third year as a blogger. Please watch out for the contest. :-)

It is also good to see some popular bloggers like Momblogger and Janette Toral. I have also met personally  Flowell who I just know online. It is also fun to see Marocharim hop on the stage to stress the message of his talks. He caught my attention and I am also considering incorporating his idea to talk about forgotten issues on my political blog.

Joseph Gonzales of BatangBaler gave a witty and sleep-removing talk on his experiences in setting up a community blog for Baler. His idea is good. He may not be popular in the whole country but he is a celebrity in Baler. His talk made me think of setting up a community blog for Montalban.

Marghil Macuha talked about SEO, which added the information I already had about the topic. My seatmate commented that Macuha’s techniques on SEO borders on spamming. That may be possible, but still, his ideas work.

iBlog6 is also a great venue for networking and meeting friends that are bloggers. I have met some internet marketers and also learned good tips from them. I have also met bloggers like Diana Chan (who have a private blog) and Chris, who is planning to set-up a blog that contains book reviews.

I have also met JM, Joy and her sister Pam. Benedict and his group are my pals in the event and they are a group of internet marketers.

Yesterday is also my lucky day. I won in the raffle and got a white iBlog6 T-shirt.

iBlog6 is an excellent event. I am glad to have attended in the event. I had learned many things and met other blogger. I will join iBlog7 if there will be one next year.

Awards for Friendship

Good things are continuously coming my way and to all the blogs that I author. Just last week, I was gladdened to receive a very special award from a blogger friend named Mariel. This award is the Friendship Award.

I did not expect to meet nice people and good friends through blogging. But I did and to hell with my expectations. I am happy to have met many interesting people through my blogs. I am glad that I interacted with other bloggers through their comments and interactions with Twitter and Facebook. I am blessed to have argued and debated with other people that fought aggressively for their political beliefs. But the best of all is the friendship that I forged with other bloggers even though they just know me through my nom-de-plume (Oh yes, ma’am and sir, Ishmael Ahab is just a pen name).

As a token of gratitude and appreciation, I am also giving this award to the special people who always have time to give this humble blog a visit. I give the Friendship Award is given to my friends Bluedreamer, Mariel, and TIN.
