This month, Filipinos or, to be exact, those who care are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the first EDSA People Power Revolution. As usual, local television are bombarding televiewers with photos, video clips, sound bites, testimonies and commentaries that showcase the peaceful revolution that toppled the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. Though TV, newspaper and radio keep on reminding us the importance of the first EDSA people power, one thing is clear --- the Spirit of EDSA is dead or, at the very least, already forgotten by the Filipino people.
I never experienced the first EDSA People Power. I was inside my mother's womb when the Filipino people braved the tanks and guns to join the crowd demanding for change at EDSA. I believe that majority of the Filipinos in my generation are in the same situation as me. We didn't experience the first People Power but we are exhorted to be proud of it. The question is how can we be proud of the first People Power when the same corruption that supposedly toppled 25 years ago still exists? The very ills that our fathers and mothers fought against at EDSA are still thriving. How can we feel the importance of EDSA People Power when what our generation had is the mob ruled EDSA II that creates division instead of unity?

"Buhayin and diwa ng EDSA" (relive the spirit of EDSA), this is the theme of the mainstream media. "Buhayin..." it is as if the media confirmed that the Spirit of EDSA is really dead. Yes, that Spirit is really gone and it is lost to the Filipino youth.

hi!
ReplyDeleteoh! another blog about EDSA it seem. lemme read, cz dunno whats EDSA about. heehe
ReplyDeleteOH! it is about People Power Revolution is it? :D oh no! creates division instead of unity? :(
You really have a point Ish, i also have an EDSA post in my blog. It's really dead and i believe with that. I think every youth and Filipinos as well really have to change themselves, their views in life for the REAL CHANGE happens!.
ReplyDeleteI am just sad to think that there are Filipinos who don't care about EDSA!. How dare these?, malamang kung wala EDSA malaya kaya sila na dumidedma sa diwa nito?, magkaron sila ng utang na loob! :)
ReplyDeleteThe people then were suffering, hungry...and had nothing to lose. I saw on tv - it was amazing - the strong solidarity spirit was something to be admired...and should live on in very true citizen of a country, no matter under what conditions.
ReplyDeleteI also saw a tv series on this - the theme song was "Bayan Ko". I really love the song!
Too bad young people today - their lives are so good, over-pampered...and selfish - the "Me, myself and I" culture - no feelings of love for country, race...society or family.
@Caroline:
ReplyDeleteNo, the First People Power created unity for the Filipino people. It is the second "People Power" that created division in my country.
@Diamond:

@Steve:
Wala naman kasi silang nakitang totoong pagbabago after EDSA 1.
Nagpalit lang ng mga kurakot at cronies.
@Blue:
ReplyDeleteTrue.
@Suitapui:
ReplyDeleteI agree with your observation. The youth today lost many things that was held dearly by their parents and grandparents.
It is time to wake them up or else they have to undergo the same problems that occurred right before the first People Power.
So it is a case of history repeats itself?
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily Foong
ReplyDelete"Isapuso ang diwa ng EDSA" is too abstract for me. Feel ko, the modern propaganda about "the true meaning of EDSA" should not stop on the catchy-phrase level. Dapat may mga concrete steps or actions na suggested ang government or any institution na nagpapalaganap ng "diwa ng EDSA." I'm sure there are some specific points.. but where are they? Are they engaging enough? :)
ReplyDelete@Alps:
ReplyDeleteWhat the government and the Philippine media all boils down to awareness and propaganda.
